BSM has announced that its AI-powered solution, BSM Smile Designer, has been shortlisted for the Innovation Award at DentalForum 2026. Winners will be announced on 4 April in Paris.

By automating abutment design, the system enhances precision and consistency while reducing manual workload—enabling faster turnaround and lower labor costs for labs and clinics.

The award, organised by DentalForum and the UNPPD, recognises innovations across digital, material, and manufacturing fields, offering strong industry endorsement and exposure.



BSM Smile Designer: Addressing Structural Challenges in Abutment Design

BSM’s nominated project reflects a broader industry shift towards intelligent automation. Smile Designer is an AI-assisted system developed to automate implant abutment design—traditionally a manual and experience-dependent process.

Conventional workflows often face three key constraints: reliance on individual technician expertise, limited scalability, and variability in output quality. These challenges can lead to inefficiencies, longer turnaround times and increased risk of remakes.



Precision-Driven Design Through AI and Engineering Logic

At its core, Smile Designer is built around precision. The system combines geometry-based AI modelling with embedded biomechanical and engineering constraints to ensure that every abutment design meets strict clinical and manufacturing requirements.

Rather than relying on subjective manual input, the platform “understands” 3D oral anatomy and applies consistent design rules across cases. This results in highly reproducible outputs with reduced deviation between cases. Each design is generated with manufacturability in mind, producing production-ready files that minimise downstream adjustments.

By standardising critical parameters and eliminating human variability in the initial design phase, Smile Designer enhances overall accuracy and consistency—key factors in improving clinical outcomes and reducing remakes.



Efficiency Gains and Cost Reduction for Labs and Clinics

Beyond precision, the system delivers measurable efficiency gains. The initial abutment design can be completed in approximately one minute, significantly shortening turnaround times compared to traditional workflows.

More importantly, automation directly translates into cost savings. By reducing reliance on manual design work, laboratories can lower labour intensity and optimise staffing structures. Routine cases can be processed with minimal human intervention, allowing skilled technicians to focus on complex or high-value work.

For both labs and clinics, this enables higher throughput without proportional increases in headcount. The result is a more scalable operation with improved cost efficiency—particularly in high-volume environments where labour costs represent a significant portion of overall expenditure.


Looking Ahead to DentalForum 2026

DentalForum 2026, taking place from 2–4 April, will serve as the official stage for presenting shortlisted innovations. In addition to jury evaluation, nominated entries are also subject to public voting via the event’s website, further increasing visibility among industry professionals.

The Innovation Award ceremony will be held on 4 April at 11:00 at the RetroLab within the exhibition venue.

BSM will showcase Smile Designer throughout the event, offering live demonstrations and technical insights.
